Preserving Savannah’s Downtown National Historic Landmark District

The National Historic Landmark District in Savannah, Georgia, designated in 1966, is now under threat from excessive and inappropriate development. The district is supposed to be protected by local ordinances, but increasingly, important provisions in these ordinances are not being enforced. Preservationists are now grouping together to take action to have he ordinances enforced and restore the district’s integrity.

Recently, the National Park Service (NPS) temporarily put all National Historic Landmarks in a “no category” status while it updates its assessment criteria. Prior to that action, the NPS graded the district as “threatened”.

The Oglethorpe Plan Coalition, Inc. (OPC) is a 501(c)(3) organization, founded January 3, 2023, dedicated to preserving the Savannah Downtown National Historic Landmark District (NHL) and its historic and unique Oglethorpe Plan, which serves as the primary basis for the NHL status. Founder Andrew Jones is a preservationist in the City of Savannah, Georgia, and the incorporator of the OPC.

Maintaining Savannah’s status as an NHL is key to the City’s national and international significance and the quality of life for its residents and visitors. Most urban historic districts do not have the badge of honor of being an NHL. It is something we should all be proud of and determined to maintain and improve.
