Preservation Alert: 201 W Jones Street
PRESERVATION ALERT: Historic District Board of Review (HDBR) addresses rejection of proposed addition to 201 W. Jones on August 14, 2024 at 1:00 PM at 112 East State Street.
The HDBR has rejected the proposed addition to this building twice. The applicant appealed to the Zoning Board Of Appeals, which remanded the application to the HDBR for it to more fully explain its reasons for the rejection.
We support the two rejections by the HDBR. If you agree, please send an email to Jonathan Mellon at the MPC (mellonj@thempc.org) stating your opposition to this addition:
Dear Jonathan,
I support the HDBR's two prior denials of this inappropriate addition. It is not visually compatible with visually related buildings, such as the building it is attached to and the building it is immediately adjacent to.
Yours truly,

The proposed addition, pictured above, would overwhelm the historic, contributing structure to which it is attached, as well as the building next door. The proposed addition would be fully visible from Barnard Street. It would obscure the historic rear facade of the main structure.
If inappropriate additions such as this are approved, the precedent would mean that as each building changes hands, the new owner will destroy the rear facade and expand the building for monetary gain. The result would be the gradual destruction of historic rear facades and a permanent alteration of the character of the lanes from which they are visible.
Sincerely,
Andrew Berrien Jones
