Jewish Colonial Cemetery Threatened by Hotel

Preservation Alert Update: Hearing Postponed Again. Continued to June 11.

Protect Mordecai Sheftall Cemetery from Hotel Development;

Dear Friends,

Be aware of the proposal to build a 5-story hotel between two historic 18th century Jewish Cemeteries - Levi Sheftall and Mordecai Sheftall Cemeteries. Please help protect the integrity of these important sites.

Mordecai Sheftall was the highest ranking Jewish officer in the Continental Army in the Revolutionary War. For more information on the cemetery, please read Mordecai Sheftall Cemetery - Wikipedia.

The developer does not have the right to build a hotel or a five-story building (rather than four-story) on this property and is seeking two text amendments to the Zoning Ordinance at a hearing of the Planning Commission June 11.

If you can, please attend the hearing and voice your opposition. And whether you can attend or not, please send an email to Edward Morrow at the Metropolitan Planning Commission. His email is morrowe@thempc.org.  In the subject line put June 11 hearing for 24-000558-ZA and 24-000559-ZA.

For your email, one sentence will do. "I hereby opposes the text amendments for the above referenced matters." Feel free to add more after the statement, but the MPC tends to count the number of letters rather than absorb their content. Please contact me if you need more background information.

Thank you for your help. Please forward this website to other preservation-minded individuals.

Sincerely,

Andrew Berrien Jones
