Updated, Preservation Alert: Highly Inappropriate and Ominous Carriage House Proposed at 219 East York Lane

June 6, 2025

The proposal for a dreary, dark and ominous structure at 219 East York Lane, initially scheduled for this Wednesday, June 11, 2025, has been continued to a future date.

We thank all the civic-minded concerned citizens who sent emails last night and this morning. We will preserve all the emails copied to opc.preservation@gmail.com in response to the original alert.

Hopefully, the property owners will return with a better design. We will keep you posted as this proposal develops. Thank you for your concern.

Original Alert Below

A dreary, dark and ominous structure is proposed to be dropped onto a picturesque block of East York Lane, between Lincoln and Abercorn Streets.

This proposal, already dubbed the “Darth Vader" of carriage houses, is designed by the same architects who gave us the overscale and unwanted bright white Amelia on York and Lincoln. Like the Amelia, this proposal is completely inappropriate in this location.

If you feel likewise, please attend the hearing and/or email the MPC your objection

The proposal will be heard at the Historic District Review Board at 1 PM on Wednesday June 11, 2025 at 112 East State Street. Whether or not you can attend in person, please send an email to the HDBR at wilsonm@thempc.org. Here is a sample letter:

Dear HDBR:,

I oppose the proposed carriage house at 219 East York Lane. It is not visually compatible in height and mass with the contributing buildings in view and is inconsistent with the Design Standards.
